Young Farmers and Old Farmers - Part 2

March 15th, 2008
Four Frog Farm | Blog

One of the big challenges facing small farms these days is the lack of young farmers filling the gaps left by an older generation.

It’s a complex issue, and certainly not black and white. But there are reasons that this matters.

Watch the video to hear Andrew’s take on the issue. Lee Dickerson, general manager of Peaceful Valley also joins in the discussion.

Hey there,
I think it’s amazing what you’re doing here, and very important.  We’ve recently moved to a rural area in Sonoma County to learn to live more sustainably.  We’d planned to grow a small market garden, but we’re finding that we simply can’t afford to live this lifestyle.  It was a shock to us.

I wonder if you could delve into how Andrew came to this land, and more of his story.  Why did he decide to do this, and how *did* he afford to purchase the land, considering that the idea is out of reach for most young people?  I think you’d find a lot more viewers coming to watch if you delved a little more into his personal story.

That said, this is a great idea. Thanks for doing it.  And - oh yeah - about half of our garden came from Peaceful Valley seed.  Most of those seeds were germinated in coconut seeding medium and coconut pellets from your online store.

Hey Andrew,

I was just browsing the local farming scene and found this site. Way to go Andrew, everything looks and sounds great! I’m looking forward to seeing you and Ryan this summer, maybe at one of the blue bird farm pot lucks.

Anyway keep on keeping

kevin

Hey, I just wanted to say that I bought some dill and cilantro from you last Saturday at the Farmers Market and it was SO yummy!  Keep up the great work!  xo

Dear Andrew:

I have a 3 acre, flat and sunny, previously an apple orchard…in Peardale with a home, soon to be available for rent. Good well and bottomland soil (not boggy). I’m looking for farmer types to rent and work the land in an economic equation that’s a win-win. Where should I post this? Thanks, Matthew

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.
