Wilco Tango Foxtrot

...besides being the current seasonal offering from the Lagunitas Brewing Company, “WTF” also sums up my take on the weather so far.

If you read the Freshman Farmer blog regularly, you may have noticed that northern California has been exceptionally wet and cool this spring.  To give you an idea of what we’re dealing with, we had two hard frosts in a row the week of May 16th; the average last frost date for Penn Valley is March 20. Guh.  Luckily, we only lost two successions of melons; many local farmers have been hit much harder.

But between the erratic cold spells have come some neat developments.  In addition to the 27 chicklets, we added four pigs to the menagerie last week.  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Snack are trotting around and rooting up their spacious outdoor pen with much aplomb.  There is also a new boer goat, Daisy, whose fate is yet to be determined (although her personality is having us think that she’ll be around for awhile).  A chicken coop primarily framed with pallets is also nearing completion, I’ll have pics and a detailed description up next time.

We’ve also started having things other than salad greens start to ripen.  Our first succession of radishes has been pulled, the hardneck garlic patch provided us with enough scapes to make more than two pounds of garlic scape pesto, and the strawberries are blushing up. Keeping my fingers crossed that the warm weather stays this time.

That should be “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”.  Or you are using a different phonetic the one I am used to!

Haha, yes, that would be the official ICAO spelling alphabet…I was just parroting the name of the beer 8) Maybe the folks at Lagunitas are big fans of Jeff Tweedy? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Tweedy)

Glad to see Willow Springs is thriving, despite the wacky weather smile We just got radishes and and garlic scapes from our farm (http://www.cvcsa.org/) last week too, strawberries the week before. The scapes were particularly yummy. Cheers!

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
