Tractor action soon!

seed-starting-greenhouseseed-starting-gh-wateringYour looking at our new seed starting “caterpillar” style greenhouse.  On the left is a table which has two 25’ long seed starting mats, 48 trays can be germinated at once.  On the right is a table with PVC pipes acting as rails for proper air circulation for our germinated seed trays.

The sun is predicted to arrive for a whopping four days and plans are being arranged to get some tillage done.  Saturday and Sunday we let the sun dry out our soils a bit more.  Monday morning 18 yards of cow manure arrives followed by Roger pulling in with his tractors, manure gets spread and tillage begins.  We’ll then attempt a try at using a row maker for the first time.  We’ll see how it all pans out.

First farmers market is next Saturday…. crazy!  Looks like we’ll be there with a CSA sales table and some Heirloom vegetable starts.

Today a writer for our local paper came out for a few hours to talk and photograph us for a story in next Wednesday’s paper.  There was a lot of chat about our farming start up and our first year Heirloom CSA.  Fingers crossed this story will bring us more local members, and maybe some new farm hands! Our ducks currently reside out in our cover cropped field in their new duck housing and  24 heritage breed chickens are in our brooder.  58 more chickens are due next week.  The labor with animals keeps us in a routine and acts as nice change of pace.

Are the pictures before & after building a hoop house? It’s really neat and certainly gets the job done. If you like, you could list a few more details about building the caterpillar and post it under how-to grin

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
