CSA 2009

March 22nd, 2009
Four Frog Farm | Blog

Last Year I offered 30 membership shares for Wildgrace Farm.  By week 1 (May 5th) of last year, I had 17 members.  By week 2 I had 30.

This year, Four Frog Farm is offering 150 Membership Shares.  We want to start the season around May 22nd.  Right now we have 14 Members.

Obviously we have a long way to go.  Moreover, it would be best to have that money ASAP, like preferably right now.  Two weekends ago this stressed me out.  We had 8 members then.  I wasn’t a happy camper…I wasn’t a happy farmer.

I’m being patient right now and enjoying this year.  To be honest, last year was a struggle for me.  Partly it was beause I expected perfection.  That’s a recipe for crazy-making.  Mostly it was because I was coping with all of these new responsibilities.  It wasn’t easy.

So, I’ll keep the CSA count going at the end of each blog.  March 22nd: 14 members.

Editor’s Note: Sign up for Andrew’s CSA at his website fourfrogfarm.com. Or else leave him a comment or write him from his farm profile page.

Zoe Returns

October 1st, 2008
Four Frog Farm | Blog

For about 20 hours, Wildgrace Farm was, once again, graced with Zoe Loftus-Farren’s presence.  She showed up on Monday to help me finish the harvest for the CSA, which was a great saviour because I was cutting it close harvesting everything for everyone.

Then, as soon as I became attached again, she left :(

All alone on Wildgrace Farm…Andrew is all alone.

It’s okay.  It gives me plenty of time to plot and sheme for next year…or sing Neil Young loudly.

Cucumbers Return, Workers on the Way Out

September 17th, 2008
Four Frog Farm | Blog
I didn’t realize it, but, we had a lot of cucumbers for the market today.  It was a surprise.  I’m looking forward to re-juicing the CSA with the cucs.  We tried celery at the market today.  Some sold.  I cut individual stalks, not the whole plant, so a lot of shoppers didn’t even know that it was celery.  So, I realize that it must be labeled very well in the future.  Also, it is a lot darker green than store celery, so…yeah.  I like it.  I guess that counts for… Read the rest of this article »

Sunday Morning On The Farm

September 2nd, 2008
Four Frog Farm | Blog
Sunday Morning at the farm.  I’m sure it’s pretty glorious.  I live a little bit away from the farm (20-25 minutes), so I am rarely there on Sunday morn.  It’s my morning off.  I am going there later to water the onion flats and switch some watering in the main field. Next year it looks like I’ll be farming on a 10 acre piece of land right down the road from where I live.  I will continue to farm at Wildgrace (Glenn and Muffy’s) next year as well.  I want to put… Read the rest of this article »

Inspiration

The seeds have been planted.  The “Antonio” bean is in the ground, courtesy of Bluebird Farm, courtesy of Riverhill Farm, courtesy of Antonio. I am plunging into the world of dried grains and beans.  I don’t know how this fits in with Wildgrace Farm and the CSA and the Farmers’ Markets and everything like that, but, we’ll see.  I am devoting a little space to beans like “Antonio”, ‘hutterite soup bean”, “Jacob’s cattle bean”,… Read the rest of this article »

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
