Endless Construction

August 2nd, 2009
Coyote House Farm | Blog

I looked at the straw bales that still need some sheathing and a lot of wire.  “I’ve got a long way to go.”  I went outside and looked at the baked clay and wild grass.  A year or two at least of cover cropping and amending to get something out of the ground.  “I’ve got a long way to go.”
My dad came out to help with the construction on the field shed.  He’s very allergic to rice and rice pollen, so he wore a dust mask all day.  It got to 102 degrees.  That’s pretty tough.  I think Diet Rite Cola should give him an endorsement deal.

The day started at 84 degrees and that was pretty warm.  When it got to 102 I felt it was hot, but it wasn’t bothering me as much.  There must be some kind of acclimatization happening.

We got the windows into the bucks.  We’ll level and plumb the bucks when the wire goes on next weekend.

Another good thing

One of the reasons we had for using bales was protection from teh heat and cold.  The cold at 400’ in the California North Valley is not too bad (good for fruit trees, no frost heave, etc.), but the heat in the summer is double plus ungood.  We were all set to get the benefit of the cooler space once the place was dried-in, but found we were getting it as soon as the bale walls went up.  True, we were not getting an 108 degree day, but it stayed at 72 degrees inside.  Letting air cool down in the shade is a lot better than warm air passing by.

Dan is at her desk checking weather reports for the coming week.  We look dry until the weekend, but there are some thunderstorms threatening to come in early next week.  Looks like we’ll be doing some baling and more tarping next weekend.

Thinking about Windbreaks

March 29th, 2009
DeepSeeded Community Farm | Blog
Man is it windy today!  My farm is just a couple miles from the ocean as the crow flies, with a small row of sand dunes and a whole bunch of flat land in between.  It’s generally pretty windy here from winter all the way through June, but today is exceptional.  A good day to test the greenhouses (so far, so good). It’s tiring to be out working in the wind all day (and colder, too), and it makes me wonder how the plants take it.  Some other farmers in the area have equally windy fields,… Read the rest of this article »

Wet Stuff

April 23rd, 2008
Four Frog Farm | Blog
Photo from Wikipedia What were those wet drops falling from the heavens today?  Someone said it was “raining”, although it has been so long since something like that happened that it feels like an ethereal dream.  Anyway, it seems to be beneficial for the earth, so I am pretty happy about it. In other news, the tomatoes are doing well… about 10 or so bit the dust over the weekend as the temps dipped low, but the other couple hundred made it through fine.  We’ve… Read the rest of this article »

Not Out Of The Woods Yet

April 18th, 2008
Four Frog Farm | Blog
Andrew hauls out more Agribon to cover young tomatoes We’re not out of the woods yet, according to the forecast. Temperatures will drop to the low thirties for Saturday and Sunday.  I have to make sure the hatches are batted on the tomato hoophouses.  I knew the low temperatures were coming, thanks to a little thing I like to call “the internet”.  I don’t know how farmers used to do it, but thanks to weather.com I now know that after Sunday I am pretty much… Read the rest of this article »

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
