Why We’re In a Hurry

September 13th, 2009
Coyote House Farm | Blog

We are in a hurry to finish our straw bale ag building.

It is competing with other things we are dying to do, and really NEED to do, the primary thing being to spend time building our soil.

But when we choose the day’s activities, we keep spending our time on the stucco, and here is yesterday’s sky to depict why.

Promising Rain, and Delivering

Dan

mid-week madness

Sara here, so sunday my youngest sister, brianna came over to help me with the CSA, and it was an adventure! our first rainy day CSA hand out, what a doozie! a 5 gallon bucket was half filled with rain water by the time we had finished, 3 hours later. It wasn’t cold, so I really didn’t mind having to harvest in the monsoon, but I did have to change my clothes a few times.
Monday morning when I went to let the chickens out of their housing and into their free range area, I noticed that two New Hampshire Hens had died, I’m not sure how it happened, but it didn’t look like they’d been attacked. :(  I took most of the rest of the day off to hang out with my little sis, and my baby niece who just turned 1 year old. It was a very nice treat!
Tuesday I tended to the fruit crops at home, turning some of the melons that had gotten wet during the rain, and harvested some tomatoes, ground cherries, and cucumbers. Today (wednesday) I spent the day harvesting and preparing for the CSA drop offs that we do. One of our great members, Sue, helped by taking the bainbridge Island location and I did the other hand off in Silverdale. Everything went as per usual, and now off for dinner!

dailyish update

so I’m going to be posting short updates while jared is away. It poured down rain the entire morning as I prepped for the market yesterday. awesome. I was drenched before I even left! Then it was biblically windy the whole market day… but no canopies flipped over this time, and everyone was grateful for no rain! Now I’m off to get a few more tomatoes for the CSA… and it’s pouring down rain again, at least I’ll be in greenhouses! TTFN sara Read the rest of this article »

3 weeks (almost)

sara here! sorry for not blogging sooner. Jared Has been out on tour for almost 3 weeks now, and I’ve been going it alone. It’s funny how you think that you’ll have sooo much time, I mean, 3 weeks, right? well, best laid plans… the first week was rainy, it rained, POURED for 3 out of the first 5 days, and then the winds came. They blew out the rain, but also everything else. One of our canopies is now out of commission, both of our chicken houses were damaged, and the plastic… Read the rest of this article »

Another good thing

One of the reasons we had for using bales was protection from teh heat and cold.  The cold at 400’ in the California North Valley is not too bad (good for fruit trees, no frost heave, etc.), but the heat in the summer is double plus ungood.  We were all set to get the benefit of the cooler space once the place was dried-in, but found we were getting it as soon as the bale walls went up.  True, we were not getting an 108 degree day, but it stayed at 72 degrees inside.  Letting air cool down… Read the rest of this article »

Odds and Ends

We had a real spring storm over the weekend.  The sky opened and dropped over three inches of rain.  It really slowed down our frantic tilling schedule as the ground was compleletly saturated once again.  Kind of like the eye of the storm, we just couldn’t keep going at the same pace.  The compost we were having delivered couldn’t make it up into the farm area because of the mud…. It seemed like a natural time to tie up other odds and ends. We finally got our electric fence… Read the rest of this article »

Farmer Math

Way to run up the hit counter, Drew. Silence!   The units are a little different, but the concept is very familiar.  Observe: P(Rain) = Q(Uncovered Wood)/Q(All Wood) U “Oh, it’s not going to rain this week.” This formula illustrates the probability of rain as being equal to the percentage of vulnerable wood you left exposed after saying, “Oh, it’s not going to rain this week.” But we are not done yet.  Notwithstanding the above: P(Rain)=0 if TankRefill () = False This… Read the rest of this article »

April Showers

April 14th, 2009
Four Frog Farm | Blog
Last week the skies opened gently for four days and we didn’t have to irrigate at all.  Until today.  We received a modest dose of gentle hail (not a contradiction in terms, in fact).  However, the soil moisture is rapidly leaving us from last week’s rains.  The summer heat is setting in, already.  The next couple of weeks are forecasted to hold mid 70- mid 80s.  So, we’ll be hard at it as far as irrigation is concerned. We have a most excellent irrigation system.  It can… Read the rest of this article »

What to do on a rainy day

April 13th, 2009
Honey in the Heart Farm | Blog
It’s been the perfect spring here in the Sierra foothills so far, and after a few weeks of sunshine, we had several days of soft spring rain.  It slowed down our planting, as we couldn’t till in the saturated soil, and became a perfect time to put up our pea trellis in the breaks between showers. We have two 50 foot rows of edible pod peas, and they are staring to get big enough to climb.  We used 5 foot t-posts and chicken wire, and erected a mini-fence for them to climb (with all… Read the rest of this article »

Water Flows

April 11th, 2009
Four Frog Farm | Blog
Our irrigation district is at it now.  We have water flowing into our irrigation pond. Logan (the other part of Four Frog Farm) went to town on our lunch break to wash some clothes.  They were farm clothes and too dirty for a home washing machine.  Plus, he had to wash some towels that his dog soiled with his soil. We had a lovely four days of rain.  Now were transplanting into our beds again. Read the rest of this article »

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
