Today heralded the first Tuesday Farmers Market - this one in lovely Nevada City.
Last week, with the blazing temperatures, we started a huge binge of produce. I realized that I could no longer give 4 pounds of squash to each CSA member, because nobody wants that much squash, and that there were so many tomatos and cucumbers, as well as other veggies, and they all needed a market, or they would find the compost market.
So, we added in this market.
The Wildgrace Schedule now looks like this:
Monday - Harvest for 13 CSA members
Tuesday - Harvest for and go to Market
Wednesday - Harvest for 15 CSA members
Thursday - Harvest for and go to Market
Friday - Harvest for Saturday Market
Saturday - Go to Market
Sunday - rest
It is busy. But, hey, it’s the height of summer. We are swimming in produce and lucky to have so many great markets at our disposal - not to mention great shoppers.
Before the season, I thought it was important to have 1 really good farmers’ market. Now I know that multiple markets are better - for our farm, at least. This is because the veggie plants produce all through the week - not just on a couple of days. So, all that produce may either be harvested and sold, or composted. The later is better for us.
Bye,
Andrew
Just wanted to say hi. The farmers’ market went well today. We keep selling out of food, so that is a good thing. I am so happy that our Saturday Morning Market is so well attended. The people are great - the other growers, shoppers - they are all happy to be a part of the market. And so are we.
I think the big hit this week was a toss up: the spring mix, or the lettuce mix. The spring mix has mixed leafy-brassicas - tat soi, arugula, kale, big mustards, mizuna. The lettuce is only that and it is quite tasty.
The farm looks good. I started digging up garlic this afternoon, and am going to give green garlic to our CSA members. It will all come out of the ground by the end of next week.
much love,
andrew
They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.
Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
