In The Big Field

If you come out to the farm you’ll notice first an area filled with Agribon hoophouses, and then some rows of (robust, thankfully) garlic. Then, you come to the great abyss.

We did the first round of tilling last week.  It took out about half of the cover-cropped area, half left to go because it’s still too wet.

Well, I was out in the great abyss - me, the sky, and an acre waiting to be planted.  It was time…to plant the sacred lettuce mix (and spinach).  Now, this has been a milestone for me.  When it comes time to plant lettuce mix, it means you’re gonna start selling stuff in less than a month.  Is that scary to you guys also?

The thing about farming for a CSA is that it makes life and growing quite complicated.  You aren’t growing one crop, or five or ten, but fifty, and that is actually a little more than a lot.  Today I planted lettuce mix and spinach, yesterday I planted head lettuce and bunching spinach and broccoli, and manyana we’ll plant some onions, shallots and leeks (by the way, if you want to do it “right” don’t plant onions, shallots and leeks in the spring - plant them in the fall). Anyway,  it makes life complicated, but it will all be worth it when I munch down on the first summer tomato.
