First Market

May 21st, 2008
Four Frog Farm | Blog

This last Saturday Andrea and I packed up the truck, left Ryan at the farm to take care of the recently transplanted veggies, and went to our first farmers’ market.  It was a blazing hot morning for mid-May.

We brought mostly heat-sensitive greens, such as kale, lettuce mix, spring salad mix.  We arrived at the market area at 7am and our booth area was already in a beam of sun.  So, I drove to the nearest store to get an EZ-Up, only to find the store was still closed.  I returned to the farmers’ market and set up with Andrea, yet the sun was strong and the heat was already intense.  So, I drove back to the store as the market started and got us an EZ-Up, returned to the market to find Andrea inundated with shoppers, and finally got the  EZ-Up up an hour later.

We sold out, which was definitely a great thing, and not entirely expected.  Cilantro was more popular than dill.  Lettuce mix more so than spring salad mix.

It was a lot of fun and obviously a great way to add liquidity to the business.

We are looking forward to going to the market next week, totally prepared, EZ-UP in tow.

much love,
drew

The first boxes had:

Daikon radish, salad radishes, kale, tat soi, baby stir fry mix, lettuce mix, broccoli, rosemary, oregano, dill and baby spinach.

Next week it will be very similar, yet much more broccoli.  Carrots are still a couple of weeks away, as are beets, peas, cabbage, cauliflower and chard.

We are gearing up for a maha (great) week at the farm, with many hundreds of row feet to be direct seeded.  We are getting 50 yards of compost to bolster the tilth and nutrition of the soil.  That will make 75 yards total this year to supply a farm about 1.1 acres.  That is a lot, but I feel it is necessary to grow the quality of crops that we want.  This also means a lot of work, wheel-barrowing it around and mixing it into the rows.

Fortunately, it isn’t just myself at the farm anymore.  Ryan is here for the rest of the summer.  Very happy am I about this.

We were going to start attending a farmer’s market in town this last week, but our application has to be approved by the board, so we’ll be there this upcoming saturday.  We need that market to sell our extra radishes, lettuce mix, stir-fry mix, dill, broccoli and cilantro.

adios,
drew

They like tomatoes also.  Not just the brassicas.  Well, the time to get them is at night, when they’re out feeding, but if a midnight run to the farm field doesn’t sound appealing (and it really doesn’t anymore), then I just dig around the base of the victimized veggie plant, find the little critter, and send him to greener pastures in some other place and time. A month or two ago, losing a plant was devastating.  Now, it’s just a part of it all.  I know everything is… Read the rest of this article »

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
