Water is flowing

One of the biggest challenges this first year of farming has been building all the infrastructure required to start a small farm.  We are leasing one acre from our neighbors, and in order to make farming possible, the minimal amount of building we had to do was a deer fence, a small hoop house, and somehow get water down to the field.

I was originally planning on using NID (Nevada Irrigation District) water which is a network of agricultural irrigation ditches that run throughout the county, and can be a big expense depending on how much water you use.  Luckily for us, our neighbors showed us a gushing spring which comes out of the hill above the farm and runs all summer long.  Because the legacy of mining is all around us, we had to get the water tested for arsenic and other heavy metals, and it turns out the metals in the water are low enough to be drinkable.  We were able to build a very simple irrigation system by digging a small pond right below the spring and use gravity to feed it through 2 inch PVC pipe to the field.  It works amazingly well, is clean water, and completely free.  I feel so grateful to have this abundance in a time of potential water rationing.

Today was the first really warm day we’ve had, and I can feel spring gearing up in full force.  We got a bed ready for our peas, and the soil at the top of the field is beginning to dry up enough to start planting in earnest…. that is if it doesn’t rain this weekend!

Pictures will follow soon of the pond etc, but here’s some general photos from today.

Opportunity of the Commons

We have a great opportunity now to protect and restore our waterways - rivers, creeks, streams, lakes and irrigation ways - to pristine, crystaline form.

For many years now our society has encouraged building, development, and industry on our waterways.  Now, the time is changing.

I have had water issues at the farm this year.  We are irrigating from a well that has reduced its output, and the consequences of not having enough water are real and devastating.  From 1 acre of production, I am now balancing 1/2 acre.  It is all about water.  If I could have one nutrient for my plants, it would be water - then sun, then calcium.

Lets encourage all of our friends and neighbors to keep foremost clean water in our consciousness.  We all want it.  There is no partisan agenda here.  Let’s reduce our residential use and keep all toxins and chemicals from going into our water sources.  That means no chemicals down the drain - instead of flushing that nail polish down the toilet, store it for future use (or, more outlandishly, skip the nail polish).  Instead of drain-o, lets use a tool to clean the drain.

I want to give my kids a planet with beautiful, clean water.  I want them to enjoy the experience of swimming in a clean river, instead of worrying about the toxins that may be floating in it.  This is a great opportunity for us.

Much love,

Andrew Hussein Meyer

After 2 long months of hot weather, it appears that we are in store for more hot weather.  That means, more irrigation, more aphids, more tomatoes, and less salad mix. My season started in February, full on.  I just completed month 6 in the season.  The CSA still has 2 more months, while the markets go for another 3 around here.  If I had more space I would be a little more excited about the fall, but as it is, there isn’t much room for a huge fall thing.  I am making… Read the rest of this article »

[display_podcast] Andrew’s farm has really begun to take shape. Irrigation is laid out, tomatoes are in the ground, and he is starting to talk about the first boxes… yum! As it takes shape, it is great to realize that the challenges are all worth it, and are a vital part of farming. Part 3 - Challenges

[display_podcast] Part 3 of the video series out at Andrew’s farm was fun to make. And it was difficult. I feel that it is important that we not romanticize the job of farming to much. As we highlight Andrew’s journey into the healthy, positive role of local CSA farmer, it is important to let everyone know: 1. It is not easy to grow food 2. There are many lessons to learn along the way! Andrew has already run into several issues which he talks about in this video. I hope that this will… Read the rest of this article »

Not the romance that was

March 23rd, 2008
Four Frog Farm | Blog
Do you remember how last time it was the romance blog?  You know, the romance of farming and how I was living it?  Wasn’t that a nice thought… The very next day was, well, not the romance that was.  Unforseen irrigation system jobs; questions about how I could possibly do everything (the real kinds of questions where you honestly realize there’s too much for you to do - not the whimsical, half-joking questions), etc. It’s weird how a mental state can change, when everything… Read the rest of this article »

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
