mid-week madness

Sara here, so sunday my youngest sister, brianna came over to help me with the CSA, and it was an adventure! our first rainy day CSA hand out, what a doozie! a 5 gallon bucket was half filled with rain water by the time we had finished, 3 hours later. It wasn’t cold, so I really didn’t mind having to harvest in the monsoon, but I did have to change my clothes a few times. smile
Monday morning when I went to let the chickens out of their housing and into their free range area, I noticed that two New Hampshire Hens had died, I’m not sure how it happened, but it didn’t look like they’d been attacked. :(  I took most of the rest of the day off to hang out with my little sis, and my baby niece who just turned 1 year old. It was a very nice treat!
Tuesday I tended to the fruit crops at home, turning some of the melons that had gotten wet during the rain, and harvested some tomatoes, ground cherries, and cucumbers. Today (wednesday) I spent the day harvesting and preparing for the CSA drop offs that we do. One of our great members, Sue, helped by taking the bainbridge Island location and I did the other hand off in Silverdale. Everything went as per usual, and now off for dinner!

Farm thoughts from the Road

I’m away from the farm right now as I’ve embarked on my last booked tour of the year  as a freelance audio engineer.   This time it’s a two week tour  mixing the Fleet Foxes throughout some lovely parts of Europe.   This two week tour ends a pretty consistent year and a half of touring with the band.  I couldn’t be more proud of Sara’s work on the farm while I’ve been away on these jobs.  Although she faces many challenges   while I’m away I always return home to see her beautiful face glowing with pride knowing that she’s kept up with the farm.  I love seeing the confidence in her farming abilities.  Sara is a wonderful farmer!

I’m in a Dublin hotel room with a pint of Guinness(post show of course) and a book I picked up on our beach camp road trip, it’s a lovely combo!

Oh yes, before I left we enjoyed a special Filipino cuisine of chicken adobo, using one of our Ancona chickens.  The Ancona breed dates back to  1851 and although mainly a laying breed this bird tasted fantastic.  This  was the first time that Sara and I enjoyed one of our  own farm animals,  what an honor!

Finding the Right Manure

August 5th, 2009
DeepSeeded Community Farm | Blog
Gardeners will often talk about their favorite type of manure, and I myself am not immune from such opining ...but when you have numerous acres to cover the decision is often made by factors of cost and convenience.  While it may be ideal to envision a farm that raises animals to generate manure for it’s vegetable fields, limited acreage and limited human energy make this a difficult proposition for vegetable farmers. So purchasing chicken manure is the most common choice, as it’s high… Read the rest of this article »

Farm Fertility Plan

August 5th, 2009
DeepSeeded Community Farm | Blog
I love the field I’m farming ...primarily for it’s town-accessible location, and also for the good drainage over most of the site.  The soils are all loams, with some nearer to clay loams and others almost sandy loams with a bit of gravel.  These changes reflect differing topographic positions across the site, as you move from an old floodplain down a small slope to an ancient river channel. With regard to soil fertility, however, the place could use some help.  Unlike most of the… Read the rest of this article »

Sheathing

July 26th, 2009
Coyote House Farm | Blog
[slideshow id=76] Yesterday Drew and I spent the day sheathing.  Good thing he is the guy with the plan.  I don’t need to know much about sheathing, but I’m very good at measuring a spot that needs a piece of wood, pondering about rotations, translations, and other geometric transformations, marking plywood, re-measuring, mentally cutting out the shape from plywood and matching it up to the hole, cutting the actual piece, and ending up with a really good hit rate for the thing actually… Read the rest of this article »

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
