This is my first entry of the Freshmen Farmer Blog. My name is Ryan Montgomery, and I am going to be Andrew’s main helper on the farm for the season.
I have known Andrew since I was two and we have been pretty much best buds ever since. Andrew told me he was starting his own farm about 5 months ago and asked me to help. I kind of was hestitant at first, but then I jumped on the chance. I figured this would be a great adventure and something I needed to experience in my life.
I am very interested in making farming a career and I understand the need and importance of young organic growers.
Now to the Farm.
So far everything has been amazing and much better than I could have expected. I had many concerns coming into this season. I was worried that I would flat out not like working on a farm and and be wishing the season would come to an end. This has not been the case, and the more I am out there, the tasks are becoming easier and quicker.
It has been a great joy for me to see the farm grow from the very beginning, although, the farm has not came without hardships. There are parts of everyday where my body just feels exhausted and all I want to is take a nap. My body is still getting used to the constant vigor of hardwork.
Many people, like myself, only dream of the perfect story book picture of a farm. I have realized that these images are real and experienced in the everyday life of a farmer, but there are a lot of other things that go along with it, such as, long hours, sore back and legs, exhaustion, periods of loneliness, and more.
Overall, the good has far outweighed the bad, and I couldn’t have asked for a better farmer to work for.
I look forward to sharing many more experiences with you all over the course of this season. Much love.
They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.
Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
