Returning

Four Frog Farm | Blog

I was away from the farm for about 12 days, and when I got back the farm looked unreal. Everything had literally doubled in size. The broccoli which previously had been healthy but small, was now forming crowns the size of my hands. It is so amazing the work the sun and soil do for us. Like Andrew says, “we don’t do the work we are just the facilitators.”

The farm is really coming along and I am starting to see the vision take fold. We have about 75 percent of the field planted and we are really starting to get in to some fun stuff, such as planting melons (my favorite) and also hilling potatoes, stringing the tomatoes, weeding, and harvesting. Well all of it is not fun, but still there is so much to do. I am hoping that May is our busiest month, and the months ahead will be getting easier. Andrew and I put in a 13 hour day on Tuesday and everyday this week we have been working at least 11 hours if you include the CSA dropoffs. I felt a little too exhuasted to work today so I took the day off. My legs feel hollow and and resting feels so good.

I am not the machine that Andrew has become, but soon I will build up my stamina.

Happy trails and good eating!!

Andrew - so glad to have stumbled on your website and partnership with Peaceful Valley. My husband and I too have started the discussion of wanting to stop renting out our 26 acres (we live on 40) and begin organic farming. Our land was once just dairy cattle for years and years until we purchased it and we have the blackest dirt around. We built our own house in the middle of our woods and built our own barn and I am still hoping to be able to rent 5 stables out to other horse lovers as well. I just have this heart feeling that this land is a way for us to give back and we do not want to poison ourselves or our children, although the farmer that rents are land says he does not use extreme chemicals I just have decided it is just not worth it. I planted my own 1000 square foot garden, however, I just need to do the homework as to what crops to start with in the fields. We would have to begin the three year certification chemical free on our fields the end of this year. Wisconsin weather, but our small town of Stoughton just started a Food Co-op in town and I just think there is so much more to growing your own instead of buying the expensive grocerey store stuff that you just don’t know where it is from and what is on it. So a big thank you and I look forward to taking a journey and communicating with your farm while we do. Have to write a business plan too. Love the artical on the rattle snake. They are beautiful creatures, aren’t they.

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
