Planting, Weeding, Harvesting, Watering - It’s On!

Things really kick into high gear on the farm when the harvests begin.  The bi-weekly CSA harvests don’t start for a while yet, but just the little bit of harvesting we’re doing for Saturday farmers market reminds me of how much time it takes.  My elusive goal each spring is to be totally current on all ground prep, planting, weeding, etc by the time the multiple weekly harvests begin.  We’ll see how we do this year.

Seeing you pictures reminds me that you have A LOT of land that you’re farming!! Other than a couple hours here or there from interns, do you have any other help? Things are looking great!

Hi Eddie.  I’m asking Andrew the same question.  You guys have the volume.

Can you tell me how you calculate how many shares you can produce for X amount of planted land? I imagine you start with some sort of mix of vegetables that represents a box over a season (e.g., 10% broccoli, 5% chard, 5% leeks, etc.) and somehow determine that you can fill X boxes per week with this mix. How do you do it?

Hey Drew,

I’ve heard the figure tossed around that an acre can provide for 30 CSA members, but there are so many variables.  Prominent among these are the size of the weekly offering, and the length of the CSA season.  The balance of crop offerings fits into the equation as well, with plantings of (single-cut) broccoli using more space than (multiple harvest) summer squash.

I created an elaborate spreadsheet starting with a harvest plan (crops for each week of CSA), then estimated bed space required for those harvests (at a set level of memberships), then factored in some % loss, and the fact that some ground can be cropped twice in a season.  Its quite a spreadsheet, but totally untested.  I think it will take a few years of good record keeping to actually make it usable, and I don’t know if I;m really up for it.

In the mean time, I’m going off what I’ve done before and what I’ve seen before on other farms ...and I’m playing it safe with capacity.

Hey Autumn,

I am getting help from both paid crew members and interns.  Right now I’m hiring two people 20 hrs/wk each, with a third coming on-line in May.  I have nine interns this session, helping out 7 hrs/wk in exchange for knowledge and veggies.
