Part 3 - Challenges

Part 3 of the video series out at Andrew’s farm was fun to make. And it was difficult. I feel that it is important that we not romanticize the job of farming to much. As we highlight Andrew’s journey into the healthy, positive role of local CSA farmer, it is important to let everyone know:

1. It is not easy to grow food

2. There are many lessons to learn along the way!

Andrew has already run into several issues which he talks about in this video. I hope that this will resonate with current farmers and help people who are thinking about starting a farm. If you have any experience with the issues that he brings up, we would love to hear about it. Click on the comments link to talk to Andrew, and to us!

This video is a little bit tough, because we are all cheering Andrew along. But think about it: working by yourself without days off for months on end? Clearly he is a trooper for making it this far.

[...] So while I try to save the sunflowers and nasturtiums by moving them back inside for a little while, the zinnias fared ok outside, but the cucumber starts bit the dust. Have to restart them and think a little harder about the next rounds of seedlings making their way outside soon. So folks, be sure to harden off your seedlings properly. I’m sure Andrew will. [...]

I can’t open the video. Can you tell me more about your CSA program. How many pounds of vegies do you members get each week, what do they pay a week? Did you have a profit from your CSA program? Thanks, I’m an OLD farmer.

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
