Mucking out the “Pond”

Honey in the Heart Farm | Blog

Today was a hard day in general: low moral, hot temperatures, issues with the water.  We were thinning the parsnips and noticed that water wasn’t coming out of our irrigation system all that well.  So we hiked up the hill and checked on our pond.  The pond is fed by a spring, and it looked pretty good although the wall was a bit broken down in one spot.  We mucked it out a bit, and went back down.  This resulted in some sediment in the piping, which was irritating.

Anyway, we talked today about how to make the whole process better, maybe intall a coupling in the piping by the pond so we can muck it out and drain it and have it refill cleanly.

Maybe this wasn’t the most interesting post, but there you go smile  Water is so important in farming, obviously.

On the contrary, this was a very interesting post.  This way of holding water for irrigation is different than ours and accumulated sediment is not something we currently have to deal with, but if we ever try to augment with other methods besides our well, this is something we may face, so thanks for describing the challenge!

Do you use a filter anywhere in your irrigation system?

This was a great post because it is so detail oriented toward day to day farming issues.
