The seeds have been planted.  The “Antonio” bean is in the ground, courtesy of Bluebird Farm, courtesy of Riverhill Farm, courtesy of Antonio.

I am plunging into the world of dried grains and beans.  I don’t know how this fits in with Wildgrace Farm and the CSA and the Farmers’ Markets and everything like that, but, we’ll see.  I am devoting a little space to beans like “Antonio”, ‘hutterite soup bean”, “Jacob’s cattle bean”, “black kabouli garbanzo bean”, and “christmas pole lima bean” (a spectacular, beautiful bean).  We’re also planting some quinoa and dent corn.

This inspiration comes from Tim and Leo at Bluebird Farm.  They’re a local farm, with a 50 or so member CSA.  They have an amazing farming scene going on.  Very inspirational.  They are devoting a lot of space to dried beans and grains.  Besides having a great summer CSA, they are thinking of ways to get going a winter CSA.

I am also thinking about how I can help provide food and sustain a CSA through the winter.  At my elevation and winter temps (never regularly below 30, or 35 for that matter), I think Wildgrace can do a great winter CSA.  I’ll be experimenting a lot with different planting times during the late summer and fall, looking at when things mature, with the hopes of doing all of this soon for a CSA of 30-40 members during the entire year.

adios,

andrew

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
