Hey farmers…

Coyote House Farm | Blog

We’re wrapping up our 2010 season and getting ready to build a new hoop house for the veggie field.  We have some of our new trees on order and will be finishing up the rest pretty soon.  We built a second solar panel and are feeling so fat that we might leave the cell phone booster on ALL NIGHT!  Yep!  Party at our hut!

In other news (ION)I was just in the Comments section and approved a bunch of backlogged comments and marked some spam, too.  When y’all post you might want to see if there are any pending comments.  Ones from people that have websites and seem a little generic, or target a specific product are most likely spam and you can mark them that way (Just click on the Spam link).  So go look at some of your older posts and you might find some comments from August and September.

Hi!

Talking about hoophouse, in case you have not seen it already, the Kerr Center have a good document on building low tunnels.  They have a PDF complete with full photo instructions, and a BOM.  It comes down to a little above 1$ per square foot, which is fairly reasonable IMHO.  Check it out: http://kerrcenter.com/publications/hoophouse/index.htm

It must be so satisfying to build your own solar panels!  I’m not completely technologically illiterate - and I remember that you gave us instructions (har har) in an earlier post - but I’m still really impressed!  Few people would take on that challenge.

Tell me it doesn’t really take TWO solar panels to charge a cell phone… smile

Hi Angela!

We built the second one because the first was so easy.  It really is a matter of building a shallow box, painting it with deck paint (to protect against the UV), soldering some cells together on a piece of Masonite, and covering the top of the “box” with a sheet of Lexan or Plexiglas.  It comes out heavy like furniture, but we’re getting 120 watts off the pair at 18 volts.  That will produce about 33 amp hours per day, depending on the weather and time of year.  That’s enough to run some CF lights, an iPod with 2.1 speakers, that cursed cell phone booster, and some moderate power tool usage.

It is really satisfying to have the juice there when we need it.  We still turn on the generator for the well pump and big, long running power tools, but this takes care of over 80% of our regular needs.  And if you have the guts to run a farm, you can make one of these things.  smile

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
