Harvesting in Rainy Weather

Rain!

Friday the 3rd of October…rain commences at noon, continues through the night.

I worked quickly to lay down a half acre of cover crop seed in the morning, anticipating the rain.  I felt like I was cheating, since I knew I wouldn’t have to irrigate the field to germinate the cover crop.  It’s not cheating.  It only feels that way because, in California, we don’t grow stuff without irrigation.  That’s another issue I don’t want to broach right now.

Then the rain started, as I had scheduled in my mind.  I started to harvest for the Saturday morning market in Grass Valley.  The harvest went well, although I was wondering how many shoppers would come to the market, due to the inclement weather.  I myself felt elated at having the rain, knowing how important it is for our survival in California.  Nevertheless, I continued the harvest until about 6:30, when, with numb fingers, I concluded to harvest with a final bunch of parsley. I felt relieve to get into my truck, take off my soaked clothes and turn on the heater, while listening to NPR on the ride home. For me it was perfection.  A great day.
