GMO Companies Go Home, Right?

Monsanto is the largest seed company in the world now, having acquired Seminis in 2005.  Monsanto not only sells more Biotech (GMO) seeds than any other business, but now (with the acquisition on Seminis) sells more garden variety (non GMO) seeds than any other company; and it is a multi-billion dollar business for them.

Popular Monsanto Seeds include Big Beef Tomato, Gold Rush Zucchini, Beefmaster Tomato, Ambrosia Melon…the list really does go on and on and on.

These seeds produce great fruits, and keep them coming…far more than heirloom/open-pollinated varieties do.  This begs the question: is it okay to support a company like Monsanto in any way?  Is it okay to support a company that is producing some of the wierdest seed varieties ever, which are cross-pollinating with our normal seeds and contaminating the seed gene-pool?  that is some scary stuff.

I wish that we could just do away with GMOs entirely.  Why do big-time farmers use them (I’ll answer my own question…because they think it makes them money…although George Naylor, a mid-western farmer of corn and soybeans, featured in The Omnivore’s Dilemma, by Michael Pollan, would disagree)?

A farmer friend of mine understands the dilemma.  These Monsanto garden veggie seeds really do make us more money through better production of exactly what the consumer has grown accustomed to - that picture perfect veggie that we all see at the supermarket.  Who’s going to pay us extra to grow varieties that they don’t necessarily want, and that don’t produce as abundantly?  Good question.

I really don’t want to support Monsanto, in any manner.  One local chef recommended supporting their good habits, not the bad ones.  Well, you know, there are plenty of farmers who are buying GMOs, so until they stop buying, Monsanto won’t stop producing.  And, I don’t want those GMO genes cross pollinating with my non-GMO varieties, ever.

Hey you should read Seeds of Deception by Jeffrey Smith.  It’s an excellent book on the topic of GMOs and Monsanto’s capturing of the world seed market.  It talks about GMO corn pollen killing butterflies and causing respritory problems for people, and many health concerns with eating GMOs.  I’ve always been a healthy eater, but since reading this book I haven’t eaten any processed food that isnt organic.  Watch out for fresh squash and zucchini, semines has several yellow crook and straignt neck squash and some zucchini that are GMO.  And of course they don’t have to be labled as such.  Email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and I’ll mail you the book if you like.

I am in the seed biz and have seen the food shortages beginning. That is why I am beginning to save non hybrid vegetable seeds.
No family should be without an emergency survival garden plan. It is easy, affordable and will put your mind at ease. Remember to only use non modified (gmo)untreated (for chemicals) seeds. And MOST IMPORTANT, and I cant stress this fact enough!! your garden seeds MUST not be a HYBRYD. The dna has been altered with a terminator gene that essentally makes the seed sterile after its first use and therefore cant be used to produce viable seds for the following years. This is important if we run into a food shortage in the next year or two. You should start growing and saving seeds NOW. If you dont need them in the future you are only out $50 and you have eaten well all year.
We sell a full garden of seeds at backyard heirloom seeds and herbs. Also canning varieties, herbs and medicinal herbs. Think ahead and prepare. It cant hurt.

You guys need to get your heads on straight.
seroulsly we all cant afford going around buying seeds all the time, herbicide, pesticide, wasitng valuable time in the fields pulling weeds.
whom is going to feed ther world in the future?
the world is growing by 70 million people each year, while land is being depleted by big city’s, less water, less resources..
Think about it for a second the only way were ALL going to get to live is by using GMO seeds. perhaps there are some minor problems but, the gains out weigh the problems 10 to 1.

You are totally and completely wrong “monsanto”. This world has sustained it’s self for MILLIONS of years without genetically modifying anything. A large percentage of the food grown in this country and by monsanto doesn’t even go to feed anyone. it goes to processing. I’m so sick of all the big agri-businesses trying to raise panic about a starving world. as soon as those multi-billion dollar corporations start growing in healthy soil, using sustainable practices to actually grow food to feed the world and not their own bottom line, then maybe we can talk.

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
