Endless Construction

August 2nd, 2009

I looked at the straw bales that still need some sheathing and a lot of wire.  “I’ve got a long way to go.”  I went outside and looked at the baked clay and wild grass.  A year or two at least of cover cropping and amending to get something out of the ground.  “I’ve got a long way to go.”
My dad came out to help with the construction on the field shed.  He’s very allergic to rice and rice pollen, so he wore a dust mask all day.  It got to 102 degrees.  That’s pretty tough.  I think Diet Rite Cola should give him an endorsement deal.

The day started at 84 degrees and that was pretty warm.  When it got to 102 I felt it was hot, but it wasn’t bothering me as much.  There must be some kind of acclimatization happening.

We got the windows into the bucks.  We’ll level and plumb the bucks when the wire goes on next weekend.

Gosh, those were some intense conditions this summer, working out there 100+ degrees.  Grandpa is tough to be able to do that with a rice allergy, and deserves that diet RC endorsement you’re talking about…Although I think the endorsement ad would mostly be him working on his computer and drinking diet RC for 30 seconds.  Anyway, I bet you guys are thrilled the hot season is over.

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
