Ellwood Farming

Ellwood Canyon Farms | Blog

I figured since I bored you with the financials I better talk about the farming side of stuff and include some photos so here we go.

As I get further into the season I am starting to form a basic weekly schedule….  Monday from 6:00 -  2:30 harvesting for the CSA which picks up at the farm that evening.  Tuesday is a field day meaning I focus on spending long hours weeding, planting, watering, pest control and feeding etc..  Wednesday is harvest from 6:00 -12:00 then market from 2:00 - 7.  Thursday morning is office day where I input data into quickbooks, write e-mails, do my blog, etc..  Thursday afternoon is more field time.  Friday is another all day field day.  Saturday and Sunday I do spend time at the farm but try to focus on less laborous field chores (if that even exists) such as watering and feeding.  Then Monday it begins again…..

Now for the photos…..

With all the summer weeds coming up like carpet on all my beds I have been borrowing a very helpful new tool, a flame weeder that works wonders (Shawn Mcmahon from Out of Step Farms has been letting me borrow it, he is another young farmer in the area, check out his blog outofstepfarms.com).

Gopher control and beetle vacuuming are still be implemented[nggallery id=190]

New sections of cover crops are being planted, tomatoes are really starting to grow and CSA shares seem to only be getting better.[nggallery id=191]

Wowee, your gophers are much meaner than ours!  Great pictures.

Oh, and Matt said to tell you he has weed flaming envy… ours is a small one. smile

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
