EarthDance Farm

Molly’s Story: I’m really not starting a farm, per se. The farm has been there, but I guess you could say I’m starting it anew. Caroline Mueller, the 89 year old woman who owns… Read EarthDance Farm's full profile here.

Last week of the farmers markets

October 29th, 2009
EarthDance Farm | Blog

Wednesday night was our last night of the Maplewood Farmers Market. We sold out of parsnips in the first hour. An apprentice actually delivered some more about an hour before market was over, which was wonderful. I think we were the only grower at the market with parsnips, and other farmers would come over and say, “You can’t grow parsnips in Missouri..!” Well we did. Beginners luck, perhaps. & thanks to Brian’s, one of our apprentice’s, insistence. A tip we learned from his parsnip presentation, since they take so long to germinate, plant radishes between the parsnips, so that you’ll know where you planted the parsnips! The radishes will come and go before you will ever need the space in the ground for the parsnips to really bulk up. I can’t wait to taste one. I think I’ve eaten one before, but not 100%.
Oh, and back to the last day of market. Our local Slow Food chapter treated all of us farmers to beer and pizza afterwards - how nice! The market is located in the parking lot of an awesome local microbrewery in St. Louis - Schlafly, so we have ready access to both each week. But it’s always nice to have somebody else buy. wink And it was really fun to just hang out with all the farmers afterwards. It made me really happy to be in their company. Farmers are good people. Pretty fun too.

Rain rain go away!

We need to get our garlic planted already! I have 15# of beautiful large heads of Music (hardneck variety) and 15# of early California white (softneck)..
all from Peaceful Valley. Hoping that after this year I won’t need to purchase seed garlic - just plant what we save from our harvest!
This Sunday we’ll have one last hurrah on the farm - well, as a group.
Technically the apprenticeship program ended, but because we weren’t able to plant garlic at our last enrichment session on Monday night, I’m hoping that the farmies will want to spend one last day together at the farm this season.

Connoisseur of Fine Foods

EarthDance Farm | Blog
Last year when deciding that I wanted to make it my mission to preserve the small historic farm that I am now working on, I talked my dear friend Rebecca Rivas into capturing some stories from the farm on film with me. We interviewed Caroline Mueller, the now-90 year old woman whose husband’s grandparents settled the farm in 1883. We dug up old newspaper articles heralding the health benefits of the organic produce that was unique to the Mueller Farm in the 1950’s (when the other farmers… Read the rest of this article »

School in session = Less Farmers Market Shoppers

September 28th, 2009
EarthDance Farm | Blog
We’ve definitely noticed that with school in session, families are busy and haven’t been shopping the farmers markets as much. We encourage folks to work it into their schedule whenever they can - it makes a big difference for the local economy when you give your dollars directly to the people who grew your food! And there is still such a delicious bounty coming from the fields and orchards of Missouri & Illinois! Have you other farmers noticed that in your area too? Or is it not… Read the rest of this article »

Where did September go?!

September 28th, 2009
EarthDance Farm | Blog
This month has FLOWN by; we’ve been busy putting in some fall crops on the farm, enjoying the cooler weather at the farmers markets, and preparing for a jampacked few weeks of awesome food and farm related events in the St. Louis area! As we rev up for our 2nd Annual Pesto Festo, I wanted to share with you all one of the main purposes of the event, besides to throw a wildly fun party and raise some much-needed funds. Just as last year EarthDance honored lifelong organic farmer Caroline Mueller,… Read the rest of this article »

Fall Crops - a lesson from a farmer friend

September 22nd, 2009
EarthDance Farm | Blog
We were eager to plant a decent stand of brassicas this fall, eager to satiate our hunger for cabbage and broccoli and cauliflower that had yet to be fulfilled in the summer. But due to our lack of a greenhouse, we did not have seedlings started, hence I was making a lot of calls inquiring about organic brassica starts. I’d hoped that our friend Brett of Biver Farms, would’ve had some leftovers (from his own plantings) to sell us. But when I finally got a hold of him, I learned that he… Read the rest of this article »

My Last Post as Intern

August 6th, 2009
EarthDance Farm | Blog
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for giving me the resource to share my experiences with farming.  As I said in my first post, I came into this summer with no background in farming at all - I had never been to a farmers market, and the only time I had spent on an actual farm was one hour of “volunteer” work picking onions on a kibbutz in Israel.  I have to say that I feel accomplished with my growth as an employee of a farm for several reasons.  First is my general… Read the rest of this article »

Potatoes

July 30th, 2009
EarthDance Farm | Blog
Yesterday on the farm, we hosted several high school students who wanted to get more involved with the local farming movement.  Vicki, the same neighboring farmer from last post, showed them around the farm and gave them a similar tour to the one she gave us on Monday.  After the tour, the students were ready to work, so we took them to the potato row (German Butterballs) and began to dig.  Karrie, another neighboring farmer, was planning on bringing 10 pounds of our potatoes to a farmers market,… Read the rest of this article »

Enrichment Session

July 28th, 2009
EarthDance Farm | Blog
Every Monday evening, EarthDance hosts an enrichment session either in a local library classroom or on the farm itself.  Last night, our session took place on the farm as the sky was clear and the air was not too hot (a fact that has decided our slow tomato growth this year).  Before our enrichment session began, Vicki (a neighboring farmer) walked us through our own farm and gave us tips and pointers on our crops.  I found the tomatillo explanation the most interesting as I had never… Read the rest of this article »
