We are very excited to announce that applications for next year’s Freshman Farmer program are now available here.

We want to see more organic farmers nationwide supplying their local communities with seasonal, organic produce. In order to help do this, we will help new farmers offset initial financial costs by allowing selected applicants deep discounts.  In exchange, Freshman Farmers will maintain a blog, take photos, post financials, shoot video footage. We hope that by doing these activities, Freshman Farmers will help to educate and inspire the next year of applicants.

If you know of any first year farmers who are passionate about growing organically, please forward this information to them. Deadline for applications is December 31, 2008.

Andrew,
I’m excited to see your blog. I am a freshman farmer - this year I’m going to start farming at my folks’ alfalfa farm. Dad doesn’t believe that I can make a living growing vegetables, but he’s given me some space to work with. I’m thinking of starting with a half acre - unless I get out of control (fairly likely). I’m planning on growing a wide array of veggies for the farmers market and a developing local buyers’ club that is looking for farmers. I also want to grow a big crop of storage beans - I grew just a few last year and they were sooo good in soup that I’m now in love with beans. I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to apply for your Freshman Farmer program, because I certainly could use some help, but I only just found your site. I’ll be reading your old posts, along with Ryan’s, to glean any helpful info as I jump into this project feet first with only a vague idea of what I’m getting myself into. Wish me luck!

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
