After the Market

After the market on saturdays.  It’s like after-hours for me, except it’s at the farm.

We had three markets this morning and they were nice and busy - just as I like it.  I had a board meeting for the market I sell at.  then I went to the farm and got busy irrigating, sidedressing our (already dwindling) basil with blood meal, and harvesting squash.

It was just me this afternoon and, with the overcast weather, I really got into being there.  Even though I harvested from all the squash (not a small area), I found it enjoyable.  It was a pleasure to work without the sun blazing down on me - mid-westerners: don’t take your clouds for granted, and we won’t take our dry weather for granted either!!!

Anyway, it looks like the temps are going into the upper 90s in a couple of days, which is fine by me.  We’re poised to ripen up our first planting of melons, corn, and the tomatoes will come full on!!!  It’s time to pay some bills!!!

Andrew, I can totally relate. I love those days or evenings when it’s just me and the farm. Friday evening I went to our farm at 6:30pm when everyone else had left and transplanted some tomatillos that were getting extremely leggy and couldn’t wait to get in the ground. It was perfect weather and just so peaceful that I almost wished I didn’t have Friday night plans to get to because I would’ve stayed and worked till dark!

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
