Hi from sunny California

So I was hoeing onions and enjoying the picturesque scene, even going so far as to take pictures, when it occured to me that I hadn’t posted here in a while.   Much has happened since I cummunicated with you last.

First, the weather finally turned and I was a very happy to find myself standing in a warm and sunny summer garden, what joy!  The consistent weather allowed us to get into a regular rythym, so planning a day of planting or weeding no longer felt like trying to predict a foggy future but has now become what I call “making a schedule” and this is awesome.

We started our market season in Yreka CA where we will be every Wednesday, 11 to 2pm, from June until the Earth giveth no more—I have been reading R.Crumb’s “Genesis” and suddenly my tone has become so biblical—or the end of October, whichever happens first.  We had artichokes, garlic scapes, butterhead and romaine lettuce, broccoli, chard, kale and collards.

On the farm, we have got about an acre of Solinaceae in the ground, and the Luther Burbank slicers have set fruit! I am crossing my fingers for a July 4th tomato harvest.  We will transplant many peppers, eggplant and more tomatoes today and thru next week.  I will also finally sow melons outside  which will mean no early sweet treats, but we should have it going on by late summer.

Three farms are starting from scratch.

They are turning the dirt and hoping to be successful enough to turn a profit, and to become a valuable part of their communities as suppliers of organically grown food.

Peaceful Valley is giving them a head start by offering them special pricing as part of this Freshman Farmer program.
